Sustainable technology for today's emerging needs

Growing public concern about the effects of chemicals on human health, safety and the environment have led to restrictions on the use of many kinds of process chemistries used by industry.

In evaluating alternatives, users of these materials need a sustainable, long-term solution – a solution that offers cost effective performance and will still be viable for many years to come.

Finding that balanced solution was the motivating force behind the development of 3M™ Novec™ Products.

The first Novec products were introduced in 1996 to replace ozone-depleting substances, such as chlorofluorocarbons, which had been targeted for phaseout by an international environmental treaty known as the Montreal protocol. From the start, Novec products were designed not only to be non ozone-depleting, but also to address concerns over safety, toxicity and the emerging environmental issue of global warming.

Since that time, The Novec brand has been extended to a variety of patented 3M products. Although each has its own unique formula and performance properties, all Novec products are designed to address the need for safe, effective, sustainable solutions in industry-specific applications. These include precision and electronics cleaning, heat transfer, fire protection, lubricant deposition and several specialty chemical applications.

3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluids

Based on 3M's proprietary segregated hydrofluoroether (HFE) and fluoroketone chemistry, Novec fluids combine proven performance with an outstanding environmental and safety profile, that includes:

  • Zero ozone depletion potential
  • Low global warming potential
  • HAPs-free
  • U.S. EPA SNAP-approved

Novec 7000, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7500, and 8200 have been excluded by the U.S. EPA from the definition of a volatile organic compound (VOC).

3M™ Novec™ Aerosols

Based on a proprietary 3M solvent technology, Novec aerosol cleaners combine effective cleaning performance with a wide margin of workplace safety and a favorable environmental profile, to help you meet today's electronics and precision cleaning challenges.

  • Non-flammable
  • Non ozone-depleting
  • No HCFCs, HFCs, nPB or HAPs (Hazardous Air Pollutants)

In addition, four Novec aerosol products – Novec Electronic Degreaser, Flux Remover, Contact Cleaner Plus and new Contact Cleaner/Lubricant – are optimized for compliance with strict California Air Resources Board (CARB) VOC limits.

3M™ Novec™ Electronic Grade Coatings

All Novec electronic grade coatings are nonflammable, low in toxicity, non ozone-depleting, low global warming potential and contain no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

3M™ Novec™ Electronic Surfactants

Novec electronic surfactants are based on perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) -based surfactants, and were developed as replacements for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS)-based surfactants. PFBS-based surfactants, with only four perfluorinated carbon atoms, have an excellent environmental, health and safety profile, and are a sustainable alternative to PFOS-based surfactants, which have eight perfluorinated carbon atoms.

Novec electronic surfactants are not considered PBTs (persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic) under the U.S. EPA's PBT Chemical Policy. In addition, PFBS-based surfactants are not included in the U.S. EPA's PFAS Final Significant New Use Rule (Perfluoroalkyl Sulfonates; Significant New Use Rule, 67 Fed. Reg. 72, 854, Dec. 9, 2002) or the U.S. EPA LCPFC (Long Chain Perfluorinated Chemicals) Action Plan.

3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid

Based on a patented chemistry from 3M, Novec 1230 fluid is an advanced "clean agent" fire suppression material that was designed to alleviate concerns for the environment – with key properties that have re-defined "sustainability" in special hazards fire protection:

  • Zero ozone depletion potential
  • Five-day atmospheric lifetime
  • A global warming potential of one – about the same as naturally-occurring carbon dioxide.
